5 Reasons to not miss El Gouna Film Festival next week
Ready for 2018?
It’s that time of the year we’ve all been looking forward to: The El Gouna Film Festival’s “Cinema for Humanity” is about to grace the Red Sea for its Second Edition. It’s aim, as the 2017’s festival’s director Intishal Al-Timimi said that the festival is “looking to bridge Egyptian and international culture by sharing ideas, interests, and dreams”.
Last year’s inaugural edition changed the scope of MENA region Film Festivals; almost a little sister in comparison to the size of the Cairo Film Festival, which normally plays at least two-hundred feature films. The El Gouna Film Festival is almost compact and bijou – Playing around forty up and coming hits, and gives you food for your mind and thoughts to return home with:
1. Is it worth the visit?
All the hype is completely worth it. El Gouna Film Festival really is something not to be missed. As soon as you enter the gates the whole town is buzzing with excitement and beauty.
The dream of Mr Naguib Sawiris himself; he turned his idea into reality by bringing the full impact of Hollywood Glamour encompassed with the chilled cool Summer breeze vibes of the French Cannes Film Festival and took it one better… Glitz, gold and the glorious Red Sea.
2. What’s it all about?
Last year El Gouna played host to international Film Stars such as Forest Whitaker (The last King of Scotland), Vanessa Williams (Singer/ Ugly Betty) and Dylan McDermott (American Horror Story) on top as holding Masterclasses with Oliver Stone (Platoon, Natural Born Killers). It saw home-grown Egyptian films such as the Oscar contender Sheikh Jackson gain full international coverage all over the world. Tamer Ashrey’s breakout debut Photocopy, and Soufra, which gained international commendations for its empowering refugee story following a female entrepreneur. If the second edition is anything close to 2017, the El Gouna Film Festival is onto a winning combination; and we for one cannot WAIT to see what this year brings!
3. What will happen this year?
An AMAZING selection of Award Winning Films ready to be shown – Fresh from the Cannes and Sundance Film Festivals, critically acclaimed films such as Shoplifters and The Guilty will be showcased over multiple screens situated all over El Gouna. The theme of the El Gouna Film Festival’s Cinema for Humanity is pretty hard hitting – showing core influencing films with deep and meaningful underlying currents that really make you think… Do not expect to find action and romantic comedies here!
4. The Famous Arab Raya will be presenting the opening ceremony!
It’s just been announced that the one and only amazing Lebanese beauty Raya Abirached will be hosting the opening night! Not that we need to tell you exactly who she is; but she’s probably the biggest journalist of the MENA region. She has interviewed and chatted with the biggest celebrities pretty much of the world united. It just so happens that she’s completely loveable with it
5. Patrick Dempsey, Yes you read it right, is coming to GFF18
The first names have already been released… The infamous McDreamy, Grey’s Anatomy heartthrob Patrick Dempsey has been confirmed as attending the festival. It’s yet to be confirmed what exact dates he’ll be in town – but we know that we’re all waiting to see his beautiful figure saunter down the marina amongst many that we’re sure will be surprising Egypt by turning up on the El Gouna shoreline next week!
Patrick Dempsey has lived two charming but separate lives on film and television. From an exuberant, somewhat awkward charmer in college comedy films of the late 1980s and early 1990s, he has morphed spectacularly into a dreamy, wavy-haired television hunk of the new-age millennium and this seductive new image has since spilled off into romantic lead roles back on the large screen as a slightly offbeat, self-effacing Prince Charming type.
